Working together to end hunger

across our communities

NOURISH HUB

New Distribution Center: The Nourish HUB

The new Nourish Distribution Center opened in September 2018. This facility will be used to support hunger abatement efforts in Rutherford County and surrounding communities by offering critically needed resources, preparation, storage and distribution of food supplies to nonprofits including food banks/pantries, mobile meals programs, shelters, senior and youth food wellness initiatives, and others as appropriate to the hunger relief movement. Key opportunities provided through this effort include:

- Provide a large storage facility accessible by trucks to allow participating agencies to accept any food deliveries.  Presently, many organizations are either not large enough individually or do not have an adequate dock or access points to accept tractor-trailers trying to deliver food (particularly multiple pallets) that has been rejected by large retailers. These trucks cannot stop at multiple sites to break those products up into more manageable pieces and thus the food is wasted. With a large, shared facility these agencies could always accept.

- Provide a storage facility for overflow goods. Many smaller facilities must stop conducting food drives or accepting donations, or are unable to buy in more cost-effective bulk quantities because they lack the storage space to hold those foods. This is particularly critical in the areas of perishable food storage, as many smaller organizations have limited cooler/freezer capacity.

- Offer a meal preparation site for mobile or other meals programs as needed. Some programs only have access to their sites periodically, or move from site to site weekly. Having a commercial kitchen onsite would allow
program(s) to fill their location needs and to access food. For example, Endure athletics will be able to use the food from the warehouse, prepare it in the provided kitchen, and take the meals they prepare for children living in hotels.

- Opportunities for this access and more without paying for this food, to reduce money spent on food unnecessarily, thereby allowing organizations to focus resources on hard to obtain food items or on the supports needed to maintain their organizations’ efforts.
